The Union Grove High School choirs had the honor of performing at the renowned Candlelight Processional at EPCOT on Thursday, December 12. Under the baton of conductor Chris Confessore, the students showcased their talent on a world-class stage, joining a 50-piece orchestra, Disney’s Voices of Liberty, and celebrity narrator Brendan Fraser. The performance took place at 5:00 PM in front of an audience of approximately 2,000 park guests.
The journey to this prestigious event began in early March when the Union Grove choirs submitted an audition to the Disney corporation. Being selected for the Candlelight Processional is a significant accomplishment, as an audition does not guarantee a spot, particularly for first-time applicants. Union Grove’s choirs received the exciting news of their selection earlier this fall and began preparing immediately. In late October, the students were tasked with memorizing and mastering 14 advanced musical selections in preparation for the performance.
“The opportunity to perform at EPCOT’s Candlelight Processional is an incredible honor for our students and a testament to their hard work and dedication,” said Rob Kroes, Union Grove’s choral director. “To be selected on our first audition is a remarkable achievement, and sharing the stage with such talented musicians and a celebrated narrator like Brendan Fraser made it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Thirty-nine Union Grove singers traveled to Florida to participate in the event, joining other choir students from Florida and Missouri for the collaborative performance. The Candlelight Processional, a beloved Disney tradition, combines music and storytelling to celebrate the holiday season, creating an unforgettable experience for performers and audiences alike.
The Union Grove High School choirs embark on a major travel destination trip every two years, and this performance marks their most significant event to date. The Candlelight Processional not only highlighted the students’ musical abilities but also provided them with an opportunity to perform on a global stage, representing Union Grove with pride.
The choirs at Union Grove High School are under the direction of Rob Kroes, whose leadership and passion continue to inspire excellence in music education.
